Mentoring for Mastery: Helping Good Therapists be Extraordinary

An 10 CE hour continuing education massage therapy course

Live your dream of providing exceptional care both for your clients and yourself.

Sustain your personal and professional health for decades.

I can help to make that happen. Why? Because I have been there, am STILL doing that, and I want to share my wisdom with you.

Gather with me online or in person, in small groups or individually, whichever best suits your needs. You will have individualized access to my 41 years’ experiences through practice supervision and mentoring, and you will earn continuing education massage therapy credits too. Read on for more about how mentoring with me can maximize the educational time and financial investments you’ve already made in your career.

Are any of these your worries?

  • At a plateau with your clients, your business success, your enthusiasm
  • Limited by strain or injury and concerned about your long-term success
  • Overwhelmed by complex client needs and conditions
  • Struggling with difficult feelings, either your clients’ or yours, that emotionally and energetically taint your work

Is this you?

  • An accomplished technician eager for more creativity and to find your niche
  • A well-trained, loyal employee longing to take your work to a higher level
  • An integrative healthcare team member, a hospital-based therapist, or a therapist whose goal is to become one
  • A skilled, intuitive therapist regularly supporting clients through trauma recovery, emotional crisis, depression, substance abuse recovery, or ambitions to be such a therapist
  • A specialist in prenatal massage and family-centered care (We periodically hold Advanced Perinatal Massage Therapy Mentorships for “mama massagers”!)
  • A teacher of therapeutic massage and bodywork (Yep, there’s a special group for educators, and aspiring teachers too)

Yes? Well, then you might be ripe for mentoring.

But what is Mentoring?

Mentoring involves an experienced guide sharing insight and information personalized to address a less experienced individual’s needs. Sometimes called supervision, practice mentoring offers assistance and support as you tackle your most pressing professional questions and concerns. Focused discussion, brainstorming, problem solving, action plan development, precise demonstrations, and/or supervised practice all occur during meetings. Mentoring can strengthen your foundations for the next steps in your work. Mentoring is how someone further along a path extends a hand to those who want to reach similar destinations.

You have many choices in my Mentoring for Mastery program, and you can get more details about each from these links.

Need the utmost in convenience by meeting exclusively online from your home or office? We can do that! For many therapists, online group mentoring is a cost-effective, interactive and productive medium. We can address all of your career longevity and success needs via the Internet except actually practicing on each other; however, with inexpensive webcams, demonstrations and observations are well within our capacities. Online supervision/mentoring sessions utilize the free, simple WebEx software platform. Not a techie? No worries; this format is easy-peasy to use, and traditional phone or phone conference calls are welcome too. Therapists from every geographic area are encouraged to participate in our online sessions

If you want the advantages of meeting in person, I primarily meet individually and with face-to-face groups in sunny San Diego, CA. These meetings are ideal for including table-side guidance on your body mechanics, technique refinement, and other hands-on questions. Being physically together also helps build high levels of camaraderie and support amongst group therapists. Occasionally a group convenes in other cities where I teach and travel to regularly, or perhaps right where you live. Contact me to see what’s possible.

A new group begins when there is a good match of participants, and we continue working closely for six months. During that period, we join into monthly meetings that are scheduled in advance. Of course, individual mentoring is just that- individualized to meet your timing needs!

Regardless of where and when we meet, you will leave our meetings with insights and specific strategies for your most pressing practice concerns. Therapists in past groups feel that they have gotten these benefits, and more.

  • Increased financial success and quality of care
  • Reduced burnout, compassion fatigue, and collateral trauma
  • Healthier joints, fewer injuries
  • More self and client awareness
  • More balance in boundary setting and availability
  • Fewer ethical quagmires such as problematic dual relations or victim/savior dynamics
  • Less emotional drain, identification with clients’ issues, and emotional pick-up
  • Less fear or resentment related to work
  • Greater clarity about what the ideal practice is and how to achieve it

I know how to work with all bodies. I celebrate my petite female frame that, in my mid-60s, is still strong and capable of deep pressure, and (just as important) infused with gentleness, respect, and precision. Whether you are male/female, large/small, millennial/boomer, my physical journey and years of guiding therapists in the classroom and in supervision will both empower you and soften you, heightening your touch and your presence. I can offer you:

  • My experiences in supporting myself and my family as a somatic practitioner as the primary provider for more than half of my children’s lives
  • Perspective on all phases of therapist development, including the “retirement” phase that I am now gradually navigating!
  • Insight into most work environments, including private practice and affiliations with osteopathic, psychological, and women’s medical providers, gleaned from my own practice and from four decades providing in-service training at spas, hospitals, and clinic settings or to individual practitioners
  • Ongoing commitment to training and guiding therapists to manifest their full potential through supervision and mentoring
  • Decades of training with developers and leaders in the healing arts and sciences, including Edward Maupin PhD and Rolfer; Milton Trager MD; Abraham Liu, tai chi master; Penny Simkin, PT, author and doula trainer; and in osteopathic, neuromuscular, and other therapeutic modalities
  • An extensive network of colleagues and other professionals to confer with and refer you to when there’s something that I don’t know.
  • My passionate dedication to keeping therapists in the profession long enough to evolve from technicians, to artistic scientists, to masters of the craft of nurturing touch.

A sincere investment and commitment produces the best results. Group participants must agree to six months of active participation. Those who must withdraw must make a request for refund stating their reason for withdrawal. In most cases, only the portion of payment unused, minus a $100 cancellation fee, will be refunded within 30 days of withdrawal; however, each situation will be considered individually. For more investment details, see how group and individual mentoring may be purchased here.

Playfulness, compassion, and a willingness to be vulnerable and contribute to the “magic” of shared learning make our groups sizzle!

Your guidance enhanced my sensitivity to what was happening under my hands and added the element of ART to my work, which has served me so well over the years. I heartily encourage any serious student of bodywork not to miss the opportunity for concentrated, personal guidance from of one of the true masters of our field.

My mentorship with Carole was instrumental in my success as a human being and therapist. She is one of my master teachers that I take with me in every session.
